Legal Adviser- Specialist Property Group NI Division Description Group Governance & Regulatory oversees and manages regulatory risk and relationships, compliance and operational risk, and analysis of overall risk at the Group level. It includes Group Regulatory Compliance and Operational Risk, Group Internal Audit, Group Legal Services and Group Secretariat. Description of business unit The UK Specialist Property Group ("SPG") manages large banking connections primarily involving property based lending but also other types of security through various stages of restructuring, remediation and enforcement (including litigation, receivership and sale). Purpose of the role The primary purpose of this role is to support the Practice Head, GB Business Banking & NI in the discharge of its responsibility to provide legal advice and support to the UK Specialist Property Group ("SPG") and the NI Businesses ("the Business"). Key responsibilities · Provision of legal advice and support to the business · Acting as a "Business Partner" in the provision of professional and strategic advice to the Business and the wider UK Businesses where necessary. · Proactively building relationships with stakeholders in the Business. · Effectively identifying, managing and reporting legal risks to the extent they may impact the Business and the UK General Counsel in identifying legal priorities for the Business. · Advising the Business in a timely, accurate, and appropriate manner (including line management review as necessary) and in line with current business needs and market developments. · Assisting the Practice Head, GB Business Banking & NI and the UK General Counsel in the management of both plaintiff and defendant litigation impacting the Business. · Assisting legal and business colleagues within the SPG ROI function in dealing with legal queries, issues and external filing requirements arising from the management of connections comprising of properties located in NI and the UK. · Supporting the GLS (Group Legal Services) ROI and UK leadership team in the delivery of the GLS ROI and UK priorities and other functional initiatives, both within the UK and Ireland. · Working co-operatively on a cross-border and cross-team basis with other Group Legal colleagues where applicable. · Working closely with control and other relevant functions supporting the Business (Group Internal Audit, Group Regulatory Compliance and Operational Risk, Group Credit and Market Risk, Group Secretary`s Office and Group Finance) on legal risk and corporate governance matters affecting the Business. · Building a network of professional contacts and other sources within the NI & UK legal industry and keeping abreast of key NI & UK industry developments and good practice. · Supporting the Practice Head, GB Business Banking & NI and the UK General Counsel in the effective challenge to, and management of, external legal spend. Essential Qualifications · Lawyer qualified in both NI & UK with extensive post qualification experience, preferably with at least a portion thereof in a commercial/ in-house environment. Essential skills & experience · Proven decisive capability to tackle complex legal and regulatory issues and provide meaningful, clear and commercial legal support to the Business in an appropriate and timely manner. · Excellent judgement, commerciality and analytical skills, with proven ability to use these skills to successfully support and constructively challenge senior business colleagues and partner with them effectively in this regard. Coaching of colleagues to help them develop this competency. · Excellent interpersonal, listening and influencing skills which constantly demonstrate an appropriate balance between pragmatism and rigour. · Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively at senior levels. · Demonstrates strong understanding of stakeholders` needs and business aims. A good team player also able to coach junior colleagues to help them develop the required competencies. · Unquestioned integrity, demonstrates clear purpose for self and team, capable of setting and delivering to high professional standards, both individually and through the team. · Demonstrable resilience coupled with an ability to both navigate and support staff through change. · Effective ambassador for the Legal function in the wider organisation and forms strong, effective working relations with all key stakeholders across the Business. · Provides leadership and supports staff in their development in this regard. · Good understanding of the Group`s key businesses, priorities and challenges, in addition to the legal and regulatory environment/ jurisdictions in which the Group operates, together with a deep experience of financial services landscapes in the NI & UK.
